Etched In Stone
the epitaphs collected

… sometimes it’s the things you don’t say …

No pain, no grief, no anxious fear
Can reach the peaceful sleepers here

Death did to me short warning give, Therefore be careful how you live;
Prepare in time, do not delay, For I was quickly called away.

I’m going home before you

Slowly her mortal frame decayed, By affliction to a shadow worn –
She’s paid the debt we all must pay, And died in hopes with Christ to reign.

Budded on earth to bloom in heaven . a very popular epitaph for the time

Death when unmasked shows us a friendly face, and is a terror only at a distance.

Had he but asked me, well I know I should have cried, O spare this blow
Yes until trembling tears should say Lord, I love him, let him stay.

God needed one more angel child Amidst His shining band
And so He bent with a loving smile And clasped our darling’s hand

Earth has one pure spirit less, Heaven one inmate more

The winter of trouble is past, The storms of affliction are o’er
Her struggle is ended at last, And sorrow and death are no more.

O lamb of God, I come I come.

Sleep on sweet Katie and take thy rest,
God called thee home, He thought it best.

God’s hand touched him and he slept . Cornwall, England

Of such is the Kingdom of Heaven

The blow to us indeed is great, we feel as if our hearts would break;
Yet though we see our child no more, he is not lost, but gone before

All thigs are possible

Death loves a shining mark

He has gone from this valley of tears, His sorrow and sufferings are o’er
He has entered the land of the blest, And now dwells on a happier shore.

Call not back the dear departed, Anchored safe where storms are o’er
On the border land we left them, Soon to meet and part no more

He lives whom we call death.

Little babes have gone to sleep.

I still have a few good years . died at 1O1 years old

So the darkness shall be the light, And the stillness the dancing . ts eliot

He has gone from this valley of tears, His sorrow and sufferings are o’er
He has entered the land of the blest And now dwells on a happier shore.

Möge ihre Seele in Frieden ruhen . May her soul rest in peace

Sleep on dear child, thy work is done, The mortal pang is past
Jesus has come and borne thee home Beyond the stormy blast

Short is my pilgrimage, Heaven is my home

Asleep among the everlasting hills.

Sleep on sweet babes and take thy rest
For such as thee the Savior blest.

Their bodies are buried in the dust, but their names shall live for evermore.

Her many virtues form the noblest monument to her memory.

And though the body moulders here, the soul is safe in Heaven.

A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home, Which can never be filled.

Our brother the haven hath gain’d, Outflying the tempest and wind,
His rest he hath sooner attain’d, And left his companions behind.

We saw not the Angels who met him then, The gates of the city we could not see … illegible

Though far from home your grave may be,
your friends will always think of thee.

A precious one from us has gone, A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home, Which can never be filled.

Budded on Earth to bloom in Heaven

Lift up mine eyes unto the hills

Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God
He to rescue me from danger, Interposed his precious blood

A good name is better than a precious ointment

Blessed are the pure in heart

Blessed are the dead
Who die in the Lord

In the midst of life we are in death

Farewell my wife and children all, From you a father Christ did call;
Mourn not for me, it is in vain, To call me to your sight again.
